The Birth of an industry
fortune favours the bold - so does the abyss
Offers for Neon Dark started to pour into women willing to extract it. The offers started at a few million Credits (future currency), then tens of millions, then hundreds.
When it was discovered that Mallera-9 was infested with Azologoth it was a modern day gold rush.
The temptation got the best of many and the abyss was filled with many new residents.
Even though witnessing many being dragged into the opening for a hideous demise greed prevailed.
The amount of Neon Dark going out of Mallera-9 was not meeting demand.
The Zoologist and an engineer named Kader Zuvic worked on a method to deploy barbiturate from a distance onto the Azologoth tentacles. The Barbiturate delivery rifle was born.
The use of the Rifle was a success and the Zoologist began recruiting and training women, eventually forming a company called Black Lace Incorporated.
The amount of Neon Dark leaving Mallera-9 began to increase but the market prices were still increasing. More operators came to the Island, thus more customers to purchase Kader Zuvics weapons.
The pay for extraction specialists also increased, but increasing demands from the company owners were seeing many more consumed by the creatures.
Independent operators began to interfere with the extraction efforts of the two largest companies, Black Lace Inc and Caterina Energy.
Small skirmishes broke out between extraction specialists and rogue operators over Azologoth resulting in injuries and death.
Disagreements between the Zoologist and the owner of Caterina Energy were initially cold, with claims being made over territorial grabs.
Until two large extraction parties from each company crossed paths at a very large Azologoth which would have yielded over 20 billion Credits. The disagreement ensued, both owners promised large bonuses to their extraction specialists to get the Neon Dark from the creature.
No one knows who fired first, but a massive skirmish erupted resulting in dozens of deaths.
Word got out amongst people working in extraction, many left not willing to risk getting into a fight over Neon Dark.
But many stayed, affirming that they would continue working and they would protect themselves by shooting anyone else from another company on site.
